A fence on the farm

This is a split-rail fence. It is made from wood that was split from tree trunks. There are no nails or posts in this fence. The wood is stacked so that it supports itself. Sometimes a storm would knock it over and the farmer would have to rebuild it.

What do you think a fence like this was for? What did it keep in? What did it keep out?
